Verse 17

With every word uttered pure
cleansed is the physical world
It's no less a penance thus,
ridding you of all frustration.
Not only you but your kith and kin
from whom you pulled in a lot.
This mystic knowledge came upon
as the mind withdrew from the senses.

Verse 16

Simple enough to say
But rare is the one
To tend constantly
To the essence.
He transcends the ordinary
Dullness and meets
Powers extraordinary,
Resting in the company
Of the Wise ones.
The mind thus imprinted
He meets the essence in
All places and directions.

Though this is easy to understand, fixing the mind on the supreme essence is the most difficult thing. Those who do it constantly rise above the mundane and the ordinary dullness of living. In those higher realms, they pick up at will abilities and powers which to us are mysterious. Dwelling in the essence is the end of those powers, intellect and worldly duties. When such realized ones lead the householder’s life, they merge with the society in the company of the Wise ones, who show the way of realized living in an unrealized world. Thereupon, whatever they do, wherever they go and whomsoever they meet, for them it is meeting the supreme essence.

Verse 15

Rare is the one who knows
The way to merge consciousness
In the Supreme.
The consciousness that looks upon
Everything as the essence
Reaches the Supreme that does
Not otherwise yield.
The Supreme resides in every entity
And organism, like
The sun lights up the world
Through a thousand rays.
Instill this lesson in your heart
And rid yourself of past deeds.

It is simple, though not easy, to capture the essence with a mind that is used to making divisions of the self and the world. Look upon everything as the manifestation of the Supreme: many forms of one essence. Like a thousand rays emanate from one sun. That way you will find the mind becoming quiet and losing its propensity to run outside. You will become free of the pulls and pressures of the past residues, which otherwise fill up a whole lifetime.

Verse 14

The Holy utterance
Puts you in instant
Touch with the timeless Essence
And releases you from
Residues of guilt, regret
And resentment.
Then you dwell
In the best place -
The core of your being.

The simple practice of focusing on the essence through a holy utterance will give you the poise to maintain the supreme awareness of the timeless present and release you from carrying the past with its myriad residues. With that release you will learn to be anchored in the Being, unaffected by stimulants and currents.

Verse 13

The bliss of union is
not yours while
you see the self
separated in the world.
Genius it is glorious
That searches for the supreme.
Till you enjoy it
All intelligence
And all competence
are only liability.
With the supreme essence
dwelling in you
It is the joy that
gets addicted to you.

Strive as you may to reach the essence, you will not succeed so long as you see yourself as separate from the world. Your entire prowess – intellectual and otherwise – needs to be deployed in reaching the essence. That is their true calling and true glory, not acquiring competence in this or that field. Competence, expertise and intelligence become liabilities as they serve to accentuate your separateness from the world. Once you become one with the essence, those same capabilities will cease to be burdens. With constant dwelling upon the essence, joy will become your second nature.

Verse 11

A moment in the presence
of the essence
is enough
to burn sins of
centuries.
All regrets and ghosts
vanish in that presence.
That alone is the strength,
not describable by scriptures.


As our attention turns to the Real and the Essential, all non-essential things drop off. These include memories of deeds done by the persona and experiences of deeds of others. As the residues of past actions dissolve, fears and complexes also leave the person. What happens then is not for any one to describe.

Verse 10

Visit you may this place
and that,
of no use it will be
if attention is missing.
Lose attention
And loosen morals
and then
turn to whom
for help, will you?
Sinners of ancient times
attest to the power
of centring in the essence
through the holy utterance.
Purify those attached
to you as well in the
lineage.

Some people try to adopt external means like pilgrimage to purify themselves. These are of no use, if we are not paying attention to the Essence. There is every likelihood that adopting external means may be accompanied by impure actions if we are not centred. No one comes forward to help such persons. The holy presence alone can be purifying in such cases and it is invoked by devotion to the Essence through holy utterances. That also helps others in the family and the immediate environment. Many have attested to the power of the holy essence of the Being.

Verse 12

Why take trouble on your head
of pilgrimage, penance and chantings
if devoted you are not?
Feel it intensely inside,
then it is like a berry
on your palm, not otherwise.
Other means are no
more than trying
to gather spilt mercury from
the floor.
This entirety I received
As a gift from the One
beyond Activity and Attribute.

It is so simple, dear, to realize the essence. Look at your desire for it, love and long for it intensely and it is there with you. There is no need for other means, which are going to end in futility. Even if you undertake religious practices, it will be of no use if you are devoid of the intense desire. I received this realization when I was taken beyond the universe of Action and Attributes by Grace (of my Guru).

Verse 9

Attend not
to the one essence,
yet hope to ascend
to the Supreme?
Knowledge is in vain
without the company
of the Knowing ones.
Attend to their ways
and lo,
worldly matters cease
their chatter.

One may gather knowledge, but it is useless if the mind is not fixed on the Supreme essence. That unity is grasped in the company of the Wise ones and then life is all music. Pay attention to their thoughts, speech and actions, for they embody the essence. Worldly worries, pain and negativities will stop bothering you.
